EziPit 1000 maintenance holes are being installed at the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, located approximately 44 km southwest of Sydney’s CBD.

The Western Sydney International Airport is a cornerstone of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis Plan (WSAP), a visionary development initiative aimed at transforming the region into a thriving economic hub.

Construction of the airport began in September 2018, due to open in late 2026. The construction of Stage 1 Cargo Works (CW1) is being managed by CPB Contractors and Acciona (CPBACCJV), while the design and service provision is handled by the Aurecon-Arcadis-NACO joint venture (AAJV).

Iplex worked with CPBACCJV to secure approval for using Polypropylene EziPit 1000 Maintenance Holes. The EziPit’s quick installation, eliminating the need for concrete bases, reduces construction time and labour costs, making it ideal for large-scale projects.

Iplex provided on-site training to ensure smooth installation. Many pipelayers were already familiar with the installation process and the features and benefits of these structures having installed the EziPit 600 Maintenance Chambers through the Sydney Water sewerage system.

Ten EziPit maintenance holes were assembled at depths ranging from 1.7 to 6 meters, showcasing EziPit’s versatility and design flexibility in accommodating various site conditions.

The EziPits were supplied in modular form, facilitating easy handling and on-site assembly. This design not only simplifies logistics but enhances safety by reducing the need for heavy lifting and complex assembly processes.

The system collects wastewater and transfers it to a pump station, which then pumps it up to 3km. This efficient waste management solution is crucial for maintaining the environmental standards of the new airport and its surrounding areas.

Michael Lancuba, Iplex Technical Product Manager for EziPit, stated, “Our EziPit maintenance holes have been in service for the past twenty years in nearby Silverdale/Warragamba. I expect these new units to provide years of corrosion-free service and to perform as specified for many years to come.”

The long-term durability is a testament to the high-quality materials and engineering behind the EziPit 1000, ensuring reliable performance in demanding environments. As the airport and the surrounding Aerotropolis continue to develop, the EziPit 1000 will play a vital role in supporting the region’s growth and sustainability.
