SunWater’s $42.5 million Cloncurry Pipeline, located in Northwest Queensland, delivered much needed drought relief to local Cloncurry residents, who no longer have to rely on water being brought into the town by rail from Mt Isa.
Project Overview
In response to persistent water shortages in Cloncurry, the State Government approved funding for a 38km pipeline linking the town to the Lake Julius water supply via Sunwater’s NWQ Pipeline. The new pipeline has the capacity to deliver up to 900 megalitres of water to Cloncurry’s water treatment plant, guaranteeing year-round supply.
Iplex supplied 28kms of 6 metre DN450 Irontite® DICL pipe to the project. Close to 4,800 pipes were delivered to laydown sites, with the pipeline fast-tracked to reach completion in just under four months. Iplex liaised closely with SunWater on this large project, providing certainty around the client’s tight construction program and international manufacture and supply lead times.
Iplex worked with their DICL partner, shipping 28,674 metres of Irontite® Pipe to Townsville. Up to 150 trucks were loaded and unloaded during the supply process, moving 6m pipes from the Port of Townsville to a temporary holding yard and then to three separate laydown sites between Lake Julius and Cloncurry.
To coincide with pipe shipments, 300+ ductile iron fittings were manufactured at Iplex’s Northern Iron and Brass foundry and were transported to Wacol for coating and then delivered to the three nominated NQ laydown sites.
This project enabled Iplex to showcase experience in delivering large volume pipe and fittings supply contracts. Closely following other large regional water infrastructure projects, Iplex demonstrated ‘can do’ attitude and ability to identify and mitigate risks and meet client deadlines.
